Hace poco más de un siglo que las mujeres empezaron a abrir huella en el mundo de la montaña. Pero por entonces, a finales del siglo XIX, se les prohibía hacer ejercicio físico; aventurarse en las montañas era más que sospechoso y atarse a una cuerda para escalar en compañía de hombres era síntoma inequívoco de lesbianismo. Para aquellas que lograban superar estos prejuicios, les quedaba todavía un largo camino que recorrer entre el acoso de la opinión pública, la incomprensión de sus familias y, lo que es peor, la crítica de algunos escaladores. Esta obra, ganadora del III Premio Desnivel de Literatura de Montaña, Viajes y Aventuras, reúne nueve relatos breves protagonizados por mujeres, quienes, desafiando las leyes de sus tiempos y sociedades, se abrieron camino en las montañas del mundo. En este original periplo la autora condensa los casi 170 años de montañismo femenino: desde la condesa D´Angeville, que en 1838 se convierte en la primera mujer en coronar la cumbre del Mont Blanc, hasta la primera ascensión femenina sin oxígeno al Everest, realizada por Alison Hargreaves en 1995. Conocemos a personajes apasionados y apasionantes, procedentes de diversos tiempos y países: Gertrude Bell, Miriam O´Brien, Elvira Shataeva, Wanda Rutkiewicz o Míriam García Pascual. Pero la autora no se detiene en el mero relato de sus actividades montañeras, sino que nos introduce en las particularidades de las diversas épocas y sociedades, a la vez que bucea en las motivaciones psicológicas de cada una de las protagonistas. La rebelión y la desobediencia, la búsqueda de la autonomía, y, finalmente, la más pura y sincera necesidad de la aventura se dibujan como el motor que desde hace casi dos siglos empuja a las mujeres, independientemente de su edad, situación familiar, constitución física y nivel sociocultural, a la conquista de las alturas.
